‘Mother’

A novel by S. Alexandra Singh

A mysterious man, driven by a hidden past, lays siege to an elite all-girls boarding school with an assault rifle and an old datsun, kidnapping a professor and a student. As the three journey cross-country on a winding path in service of a violent plan, the girl’s strange insistence that she’s not a captive blurs the lines between captor and companion. The man, Elliot, is on a journey to find and punish those who were complicit in the depraved crime that stole his childhood. The professor, his real target at the school, was the first name on his list, the girl, Angel, an unexpected addition. As the party meanders around via backroads, one captive in the passenger seat and one in the trunk, Angel’s presence continues to complicate Elliot’s quest for vengeance.

Mother, a 98,000-word adult psychological fiction novel, explores themes of psychological complexity, trauma, and interpersonal dynamics. It resonates with works like Bunny by Mona Awad, The Push by Ashley Audrain, Luster by Raven Leilani, Nightcrawling by Leila Mottley, and My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh. These novels share themes that align with Mother’s focus on inherited trauma and family relationships.
